COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s soccer team traveled to Collegeville on Friday and took home a hard-fought 1-0 victory. With the win the Gusties move to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Both teams had a few good chances in the first half but the Gusties had the upper hand as they dominated in possession, outshooting the Johnnies on net 9-0. Despite multiple opportunities to get on the board, Gustavus couldn’t break through a locked-in Saint John’s goalkeeper and would head into the second half scoreless.
17 minutes into the second half Matthew Gibbons (Sr., Minneapolis) beat out two Johnnie defenders before it was saved by the goalkeeper, setting up Scott Heinen (Sr., Aurora, Ill.) to score what proved to be the game winning goal on the rebound. Saint John’s had a couple good looks late into the match to even it up, but they were unable to convert accordingly. Gustavus once again proved to have the stronger attack, outshooting 6-0 on net but would have to settle for the 1-0 final.
Egan Bedwell (Fy., Milwaukee, Wis.) was credited with the shutout on his fourth win of the year.
The team is back in action next Tuesday when they host Saint Mary’s with a 4:00 kick off.
