SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s soccer team hosted Bethany Lutheran College in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night and took a 2-1 victory. With the win, the Gusties move to 5-3 overall.
The Gusties got the scoring going at the 34 minute mark when Nick Katzman (Jr., Minneapolis) put in his third goal of the season with assists going to Owen Johnson (So., Apple Valley) and Sam Just (So., Lakeville). Gustavus held onto a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In half two, Cole Schwartz (Sr. Jakarta, Indonesia) scored a highlight reel worthy goal on a bicycle kick with nineteen minutes remaining and Otis Anderson (Jr., Minneapolis) was credited with the assist.
Bethany Lutheran scored a late consolation goal with less than a minute left for the Gusties to settle with the 2-1 win.
“Anyone who watched today knows that it simply wasn’t good enough, we’ll take the result and recognize that the performance wasn’t what it needed be,” said Head Coach Tudor Flintham. “We need to improve very quickly. The MIAC season starts again on Friday against an extremely hard working team who can cause real problems. The guys need to recognize that talent simply isn’t enough.”
The game concluded with the Gusties having a shots on goal advantage of 16-6. Egan Bedwell (Fy., Milwaukee, Wis.) made one save and did not allow a goal, while Wesley Sanders (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) closed the second half with three saves and allowed one goal.
Gustavus is next in action when they travel to Saint John’s on Friday with a 4 p.m. kickoff.
