BETTENDORF, Iowa – The Gustavus men’s tennis team Saturday met Washington University-St. Louis in the middle at a neutral site and lost 8-1 in its first outdoor match of the season. The Gusties drop to 7-2 overall, while the Bears improve to 4-1.
“I was proud of the team’s effort today,” Head Coach Tommy Valentini said. “It was a big ask to take on a WashU team of this caliber in our first outdoor match in a long time. The guys came out with very good energy in the doubles. We weren’t able to execute quite as well as we needed to there, but did a lot of good things. Once they had the big lead, they were able play downhill a bit on us in the singles. Still, our guys competed well, fought hard and made some important strides. We learned a lot about ourselves in this one as a result of embracing this tough challenge, and the guys will grow and improve from it moving forward.”
