MINNEAPOLIS Minn. – The Gustavus women’s hockey team took a 3-2 win in overtime against Augsburg on Thursday.
Both teams put up strong defensive efforts in the first period with the Gusties outshooting the Auggies 11-6. Gustavus had a powerplay opportunity with five minutes remaining but Augsburg held them scoreless to close out the first period.
The Gusties came back stronger in the second period. With their second powerplay of the day, Sophia Coltvet (Fy., Arden Hills) tallied her third goal of the season with assists from Tina Press (Jr., Cottage Grove) and Hailey Holland (So., Aberdeen, S.D.). Just two minutes later, Molly McHugh (So., Minnetonka) notched her first goal of the season to take a 2-0 lead assisted by Coltvet to end the second frame.
Augsburg retaliated five minutes into the third period and put pressure on the Gusties and tacked on a second goal ten minutes later. Gustavus was not able to respond back and the game would go into a three on three overtime.
Three minutes into overtime, the Gusties set up two on one play for Holland to connect with Brooke Power (Fy., Lakeville) in a pass in front of the net. Power’s one timer shot proved success for the Gusties to secure the 3-2 win.
“I give a lot of credit to our team because it was a physical game,” said Head Coach Mike Carroll. “Augsburg got those goals but I’m really proud of them. We’ve been working on overtime play in practice just to give them something to do and it certainly paid off. It also was a really nice final play to win. Overall, it was a good hockey game.”
Katie McCoy (So., Grafton, Wis.) got the start in net with nine saves in 40 minutes played and Emilia Helms-Leslie (Jr., Fairbanks, Alaska) closed the remaining 23 with six saves while allowing two goals.
