MOORHEAD, Minn. – No. 6 Gustavus women’s hockey Saturday completed the series sweep with a 3-1 win over Concordia. The Gusties are now 15-3-2 overall and 11-1-2 in the MIAC, while the Cobbers are 6-15-0 overall and 4-10-0 in the league.
“It’s very important to get a sweep and at this time of the year, if you have a rough go at it, you want to get back on track,” Head Coach Mike Carroll said. “We got things to work early on and played a great first. We let them back in it in the second but had a great goal late in the period that allowed us to play differently in the third. Very proud of the effort today.”
Just over three minutes into the game, Lindsey Bjerke (Fy., New Prague) scored unassisted for the early lead. With five minutes remaining in the first period, Alaina Halverson (Fy., Rochester) scored another unassisted goal and the Gusties held a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.
The Cobbers scored their first goal of the series six minutes into the second and it appeared the score would remain 2-1 after two periods, but Kristina Press (So., Cottage Grove) scored with just eight seconds on the clock and the Gusties got a big momentum swing into the second intermission with a 3-1 lead.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the third period and the Gusties held in for the two-goal victory. The Gusties outshot the Cobbers 33-16. Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play. Katie McCoy (Fy., Grafton, Wis.) made 15 saves to pick up the win.
Gustavus takes on Saint Benedict next weekend for a home-home series. Friday night’s game is at Saint Ben’s and Saturday’s rematch is in Saint Peter.
