SAINT PETER, Minn. – The No. 25 Gustavus women’s basketball team will travel to St. Joseph Wednesday to take on Saint Benedict for a 7 p.m. contest. The Gusties enter 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the MIAC while the Bennies are 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
The Series: Wednesday’s contest marks the 78th all-time meeting between the two teams, with Saint Benedict currently holding a 49-28 edge. The two teams last met on Feb. 19, 2019 in the MIAC quarterfinals with Gustavus taking a decisive 73-43 win.
Scouting the Gusties: Gustavus is coming off a statement win on Saturday, defeating then No. 6 St. Thomas 62-57. After seven contests the Gusties average 73.0 points per game which ranks third in the MIAC, while their 50.6 points allowed ranks first. The stout defense has held Gustie opponents to the lowest field goal percentage (34.0) and three-point percentage (22.6) of any MIAC team. Reigning MIAC Player of the Week Caitlin Rorman leads the charge, averaging a team-high 16.1 points and 7.6 rebounds, while her 63.9 percent field goal percentage is the fourth best in the MIAC. Ava Gonsorowski has also been strong, scoring 13.1 points to go along with a team-best 3.4 assists per game.
Scouting the Bennies: Saint Benedict comes into the contest most recenlty falling to Carleton Monday 64-63. Through seven contests the Bennies average 71.4 points per game while allowing 57.0. Megan Thompson and Alex Johnson are the Bennies top scorers thus far, averaging 13.5 and 12.0 points per game, respectively. Thompson is the team leader in assists per game with 3.3, while Johnson averages a MIAC-bests 10.1 rebounds.
