Women’s Soccer Heads to Saint Ben’s Saturday

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team travels to Saint Benedict on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. MIAC contest. The Gusties enter the game 2-9 overall and 1-4 in the MIAC, while the Bennies are 6-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the league.

The Series: Saturday’s game marks the 38th meeting between Gustavus and Saint Ben’s with the Gusties edging the all-time series 17-16-4. Last season the Bennies won 3-2 on Oct. 13 in St. Joseph. Katie Ashpole and Chase Miller scored the two Gustie goals, but Megan Thompson recorded a hat trick to lead the Bennies to victory.

Scouting the Gusties: Gustavus has lost its last four games, most recently dropping a 2-0 decision at UW-La Crosse on Wednesday. Through 11 games, Katie Ashpole (Jr., Chaska) continues to lead the offense with nine points on four goals and an assist. Taylor Hemme (Jr., Eden Prairie) leads the team with three assists. Ashley Becker (Sr., Farmington) has started all 11 games in net with a 1.97 goals against average and a .756 save percentage. Her 66 saves lead the MIAC.

Scouting the Bennies: Saint Ben’s is coming off a 2-0 win over Saint Mary’s last Saturday and has won three of the last four. Megan Thompson leads the team with 26 points on 11 goals and four assists. Her 11 goals rank second in the MIAC and her 26 points are one off the league lead. She also has five game-winning goals. Kendall Koenen has started seven of 10 games in net with a 1.63 goals against average and a .718 save percentage.
