Women’s Soccer Hosts St. Olaf Saturday in Ovarian Cancer Awareness Game

The Gustavus women’s soccer team is hosting St. Olaf at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The contest is designated as a “Team Trina” Ovarian Cancer Awareness game. Trina Rinke was a midfielder for the Gusties until last season and was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the summer of 2017.

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team is hosting St. Olaf at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The contest is designated as a “Team Trina” Ovarian Cancer Awareness game. Trina Rinke was a midfielder for the Gusties until last season and was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the summer of 2017. A voluntary entrance donation to the game will go to the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance, which provides support to women with ovarian cancer while raising awareness and advancing research.

The Gusties enter the game 2-7 overall and 1-3 in the MIAC, while the Oles are 6-3-1 overall and 3-1 in the league.

The Series: Saturday’s game marks the 46th meeting between Gustavus and St. Olaf with the Gusties leading the all-time series 24-17-4. Last season the Oles won 2-1 on Sept. 26 in Saint Peter. Mackenzie Schoustra scored both goals for the Oles, while Lauren Johnson had the lone Gustie score.

Scouting the Gusties: Gustavus most recently dropped a 2-1 overtime game at Augsburg on Wednesday night. Through nine games Katie Ashpole (Jr., Chaska) continues to lead the offense with seven points on three goals and an assist. Abby Mullenbach (Sr., Lakeville) is second on the scoresheet with five points on two goals and an assist. Ashley Becker (Sr., Farmington) has started all nine games with a 2.04 goals against average and a .739 save percentage. Becker has the second most saves in the MIAC at 52.

Scouting the Oles: St. Olaf ended a two-game skid Wednesday with a 4-3 double overtime win against Saint Mary’s. Through 10 games Hayley Hoffmann paces the offense with three goals and three assists for nine points. Tessa Anderson is next in line with eight points on three goals and two assists. Brynne Davis has started eight games in goal with a 2.39 goals against average and a .631 save percentage. Her 41 saves are fourth most in the MIAC.
