MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team Wednesday night suffered a hard-fought 2-1 overtime loss at Augsburg. The loss drops the Gusties to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in the MIAC, while the Auggies improve to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the league.

After a scoreless first half that saw the Auggies outshoot the Gusties 7-4, Lauren Johnson (Jr., Woodbury) found the back of the net unassisted for the first time this season, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute. Nearly six minutes later the Auggies were able to net the equalizer and neither team could pull ahead throughout the remainder of regulation.

Augsburg was able to score the game winner 3:22 into the extra frame to seal the victory.

Ashley Becker (Sr., Farmington) made 10 saves, her second most this season.

“This was our best 90-plus of the entire year,” Head Coach Laura Burnett-Kurie said. “We came out super strong, created dangerous opportunities and battled. It was an exciting game from the start to the finish. Obviously we wanted a different result, but we are proud of our performance and took a huge step forward in our progress this season. Everyone played incredibly well, but a huge shout out to our backline and Lauren Johnson. We know if we continue to play with this intensity and grit we will finish out the season strong.”

Gustavus next hosts St. Olaf at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
