SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s soccer team will head to Augsburg Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest looking to keep its unbeaten MIAC record alive against the Auggies who are looking for their first conference win. The Gusties enter 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference while Augsburg is 4-4-1 overall and 0-3 in the MIAC.
The Series: Tuesday’s contest marks the 67th contest between the two teams with the Gusties holding a 41-19-6 advantage. The two teams last met on Oct. 31, 2018 in last season’s MIAC Semifinals with the Auggies taking a 1-0 victory.
Scouting the Gusties: Gustavus is most recently coming off a 5-1 win over UW-Superior on Wednesday. The potent Gustavus offense has been on top of its game this season, ranking first nationally in scoring offense (4.88), assists per game (4.88), and points per game (14.63). Cole Schwartz (So., Jakarta, Indonesia) (12g, 4a) leads the Gusties and MIAC with 28 points while fellow teammates Raphael Cattelin (Fy., Edina) (6g, 11a)and Matt Gibbons (Jr., Minneapolis) (6g, 8a) have 23 and 20, respectively. All three players are in the top-15 in the nation in points per game. Wesley Sanders (Fy., Urbandale, Iowa) has played every minute in net this season for the Black and Gold, making 26 saves while allowing seven goals for a save percentage of .788.
Scouting the Auggies: Augsburg is most recently coming off a 4-3 loss to Saint Mary’s Saturday. Through nine games this season Augsburg is led by Lionel Vang, who has notching 13 points thanks to four goals and five assists. Five other Auggies have two goals on the season with Nich Zuchowski totaling the most points with seven. Garret Kaelin has started the most matches in net, posting 23 saves and 11 goals against, while compiling a record of 1-3-1.
