NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s cross country team Saturday took fourth out of 14 teams at Carleton’s Running of the Cows. Carleton won the event, UW-La Crosse took second, and Minnesota State-Mankato placed third.

Tierney Winter (Sr., Waterville) paced the Gusties with a fourth-place finish, crossing the line in 23:18.7. Kourtney Kulseth (Jr., New Richland) took 16th in 23:59.1, Mackinzee Miest (So., St. James) finished 22nd at 24:11.3, and Lily Engebretson (So., St. Paul) placed 38th in 24:43.6.

“We were looking to see where we sit in this field of competition,” Head Coach Brenden Huber said. “We knew we weren’t going to be at full strength and held back a little with the weather conditions today. To know that we can compete that well and not run 100 percent is encouraging. Tierney looked amazing, Kourt had a solid day, and Kinzee Miest ran out of her mind. The wave kept coming after those three. We have some things still to work on but it’s a really good starting point for the first 6k of the season.”

Clara Mayfield of Carleton won the race in 22:20.9.

Gustavus has next weekend off and then runs in the Wartburg Invitational on Oct. 5
