SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s track & field team sits in fifth place with 29 points after seven events scored Friday at the MIAC Outdoor Championships, hosted by the University of St. Thomas. The Gusties earned two conference titles, while four more advanced to the finals Saturday.

“We saw personal bests across the board today with everyone going out and competing their best,” Head Coach Dale Bahr said.

The 4×800 relay team of Sara Moen (So., Blaine, Minn.), Josie Blake (So., Waukegan, Ill.), Tierney Winter (Jr., Waterville, Minn.), and Abigail Schnabel (Sr., Hamburg, Minn.) capped day one by winning their race with a school record time of 9:21.40.

“It’s a young group with one senior so they are stepping up and showing composure,” Bahr said. “They are competing when it matters. It was a good way to finish the day and it motivates the team going into tomorrow.”

Annalee Olson-Sola (Fy., Northfield, Minn.) also won a championship with a throw of 42-8 in the shot put.

“For a first year to step up and compete with the top ladies in the conference, it really shows the type of competitor she is,” Bahr said.

Advancing to Saturday’s finals include Moen in the 400-meter, Winter in the 1500-meter, and Haley Anderson (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Schnabel in the 800-meter.

“Haley and Abbie ran hard and didn’t leave it to chance,” Bahr said. “Same thing with Sara Moen in the 400. Her previous times were three seconds slower than today. She is a great competitor. Tierney Winter won handedly so we have a lot of women who are in a position to score. It was also nice to see some solid performances in the javelin.”
