Men’s Tennis Captures 31st Consecutive MIAC Title, Tops Carleton 7-2 Posted on April 27th, 2019 by

ROCHESTER, Minn. – In a matchup of previously unbeaten MIAC teams, the No. 16 Gustavus men’s tennis team beat No. 38 Carleton 7-2 Saturday at the Rochester Athletic Club. The Gusties are now 16-7 overall and 8-0 in the MIAC, while the Knights are 21-3 overall and 7-1 in the league. Gustavus has now clinched at least a share of its 31st consecutive MIAC championship and 53rd overall and can win the title outright with a victory tomorrow at St. Thomas.

The guys played a great match tonight,” Head Coach Tommy Valentini said. “Carleton is a very strong team and they played very tough today. We got a great start from Aney and Derbani at two doubles. We competed well at three and just didn’t get the result there. Patrick and Chase were excellent at the top to give us a 2-1 lead. In the singles, we stayed composed and stayed together and executed our game plans well. Aney And Raut played some great singles for us tonight and gave us a huge lift coming out of the doubles. Chase and Yassine put together very solid tactical matches. O’Neil fought beautifully to come through in the third and Whaling competed great today and played a big time second set to have a look there and just didn’t come through against a top caliber opponent. We had great support from fans and alumni out today. It was great to compete in front of them. We are grateful the result matched how well our group competed today. We’ll look to build on it heading into tomorrow.”
