SAINT PETER, Minn. – Due to Saturday’s weather forecast, the Gustavus vs. Augsburg baseball doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday has been moved back to 1 p.m. Sunday at the Gustie Baseball Field. The Gusties enter the doubleheader 19-9 overall and 10-4 in the MIAC, while the Auggies are 8-22 overall and 4-12 in the league.
THE SERIES
Sunday’s doubleheader marks the 164th and 165th meetings between Gustavus and Augsburg on the diamond with the Gusties owning a 91-72 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams last met May 6, 2018 with the Gusties sweeping the series 4-1 and 5-2 in Minneapolis, Minn.
SCOUTING THE GUSTIES
Gustavus has won its last seven games in the MIAC to climb atop the league standings with six games remaining in the regular season. The seven-game winning streak in the MIAC is the longest for Gustavus since it won its first nine league games in the 2008 season. Cole Pengilly continues to lead the offense with a .407 batting average (37-91), which ranks fourth in the MIAC. Pengilly also leads the team with 20 runs, 17 RBI, and 49 total bases. Matt Berkner is next in batting with a .337 average (30-89) with 17 RBI as well. Christian Johnson is slated to start game one on the mound against the Auggies. Johnson is 3-2 with a 3.57 ERA and ranks fourth in the MIAC with 47 strikeouts in 35.1 innings. Sam Archer is the probable starter for game two. He owns a 3-1 record and 3.93 ERA with six starts, two complete games, and a team-high 36.2 innings. Damon Rademacher has made a team-high 14 relief appearances with a 3-0 record, 2.61 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 20.2 innings.
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES
Augsburg has struggled as of late, dropping its last four games and eight of its last nine, most recently losing 5-4 to Hamline on Thursday. Mike Brookshaw leads the offense with a .300 batting average (30-100), including 17 runs, 15 RBI, 14 walks, 10 stolen bases, and seven extra-base hits. Clayton Bodine and Dan Phyle are next, each with .280 averages. Bodine leads the team with six doubles and Phyle is second on the squad with 14 runs. Jamie Kaye is the ace of the pitching staff with a 5-2 record and 1.88 ERA with six complete games and a 51:8 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Along with Kaye, Matthew Nicklay has started seven games and boasts a 0-6 record and 5.88 ERA after 33.2 innings. Joey Tschida has made a team-high nine relief appearances with a 4.15 ERA and 13 innings.
