BOSTON – Michael Hensch (Sr., North Branch, Minn.) and Taylor Rooney (So., Andover, Minn.) represented Gustavus at the NCAA Division III Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday.

Rooney took 10th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.228 in the prelims, missing the final by .023.

“He had a good state of mind going into the race and we thought he would be able to make it to finals,” Head Coach Dale Bahr said of Rooney’s race. “Unfortunately, he did not have a very good start and played catch up the entire race. He made up a lot of ground over each hurdle but when you compete at this level, all parts of your race are exposed and when there is a flaw or mistake, it is tough to make it up. Since his race is only 60 meters long, he ran out of time. Taylor is a competitor and has been putting in the work. I have no doubt this will motivate him to qualify for the outdoor nationals, which he was not able to do last season. He is a competitor and I am excited to see what he is going to do.”

Hensch finished 13th in the weight throw with a toss of 60-2.5 on his first attempt. His second throw went 60-2.5 as well and the third heave marked 59-2.25. Hensch missed the opportunity for another three throws by 2-4.25.

“He threw well; I believe his second best throw of his career,” Bahr said. “But it just wasn’t enough to get him to finals today. Tork was seeing some really good throws in practice the last couple weeks and thought Mike would be able to pop one today in competition. Mike is very consistent and we saw that again today. Coming in sitting 17th and placing 13th is nothing to hang your head about.”

Hensch will compete in the shot put at 2:15 p.m. CST Saturday.
