SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s basketball will head to Collegeville, Minn. Wednesday night for MIAC action versus No. 11 Saint John’s. The Gusties enter the contest 5-8 and 2-6 in the MIAC while the Johnnies are 11-1 with a 7-0 mark in the conference.
The Series
Tonights contest marks the 183rd meeting between the two teams with the Gusties holding a 111-71 edge. The two teams met on Dec. 1 of this season with the Johnnies taking an 83-71 victory.
Scouting the Gusties
The Gusties are most recently coming off of a 92-78 loss to Augsburg on Monday. The Auggies accumulated a 56-29 halftime lead and held off the Gustie rally late to secure the victory. In the contest, Riley Sharbono, Vannis Smith, and Charlie Krambeer all reached double figures. Sharbono leads the team in scoring with 13.6 points per contest. First-year Nolan Malo has been solid inside averaging 11.3 points on 56.6 percent shooting while pulling in 5.3 rebounds per game. As a team the Gusties rank fourth in the MIAC in both field goal percentage and three point percentage with marks of 46.7 and 37.4 respectively.
Scouting the Johnnies
After dropping their second contest of the season to UW-Whitewater, the Johnnies have rattled off 10 straight victories, most recently defeating Concordia on Monday by a score of 83-44. Saint John’s is tough offensively as they lead the MIAC in points, field goal percentage, three point percentage and assists. They have three players averaging double figures in David Stockman, Jubie Alade, and Lucas Walford with Stockman leading the bunch averaging 15.5 points per game. Walford leads the team in rebounds with 9.3 per game while Stockman averages a team-leading 3.7 assists.
