SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s basketball team is set to play their first home MIAC contest of the season Saturday when they host Saint John’s at 3 p.m. The Gusties enter the contest at 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the MIAC while the Johnnies are 4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Hanson Eyes 500th Win
Gustavus Head Coach Mark Hanson currently holds a 499-266 overall record in 29 seasons at the helm. He is looking to become the 16th active NCAA Division III coach to reach 500 wins and the 47th all time.
The Series
This is the 180th all-time matchup between the two teams with the Gusties leading 111-68. The two teams last met in the final contest of the Gusties 2017-18 season on Feb. 2, 2018 with the Johnnies prevailing 78-73.
Scouting the Gusties
Gustavus is coming off a 79-62 loss to Hamline on Wednesday night. Riley Sharbono (Sr., Marshall, Minn.) led all Gusties with 18 points and he leads the team this season averaging 14.2 points per game. Logan Rezac (So., Andover, Minn.) is second on the team with 8.2 points per contest and leads the team with 15 total assists on the year. Nolan Malo (Fy., Owatonna, Minn.) averages 5.2 rebounds per game to lead the team and contributes 7.4 points per game.
Scouting the Johnnies
Saint John’s comes into the contest having defeated Bethel 90-55 in their MIAC opener on Wednesday. The Johnnies are balanced scoring with four players averaging double figures. David Stockman leads the bunch averaging 15 points and also 4.4 assists per game. Oakley Baker, Lucas Walford, and Jubie Alade are the other three Saint John’s players averaging at least 10 points with Walford averaging 9.2 rebounds per game. As a team this season the Johnnies are shooting 55.4 from the field and 50.0 percent from beyond the arc.
