SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s tennis team once again saw an abundance of success in the ITA Championships on Saturday. The Gusties have five of the eight members of the quarterfinals in the singles draw, as well as two sets of Gusties in the doubles draw.
In the singles draw, the five Gusties that advanced, along with their score in the round of 16 are as follows: Yassine Derbani (6-2, 6-1), Chase Johnson (6-0, 6-1), Michael O’Neil (7-5, 7-5), Indraneel Raut (6-2, 6-4), and Patrick Whaling (6-1, 6-1).
In doubles action the tandems that advanced were Yassine Derbani/Nick Aney and Patrick Whaling/Chase Johnson. Derbani and Aney won their quarterfinal match by a score of 8-6 while Whaling and Johnson won 8-1.
After the day, Coach Tommy Valentini said, “The guys were fantastic today. In every event, our guys handled adversity well and stayed committed to our game plan and took advantage of the opportunity to compete. Our leaders were outstanding, everyone supported each other, and it was a pleasure to watch our new guys compete with our values. We were fortunate to have some great results today, and we look forward to another exciting day tomorrow in singles and doubles in both tournaments tomorrow.”
The action has been moved tomorrow morning due to weather so singles play will begin at 10 am.
