JANESVILLE, Wis. – The No. 28-ranked Gustavus women’s tennis team opened the NCAA Championships Friday afternoon with a 6-0 first round regional win over the College of St. Scholastica. Appearing in its 26th NCAA Tournament, Gustavus now owns a 38-27 overall record in the national playoff and has reached the regional semifinal for the third year in a row.

The Gusties went up 3-0 and followed with singles wins at No. 1 while Nos. 4 and 6 finished simultaneously for the clean sweep.

“The women came out playing hard from the first ball,” said Head Coach Jon Carlson. “The team’s intensity and energy took the wind out of the sails of a good St. Scholastica team.”

Gustavus, now 18-7 overall, moves on to the regional semifinal and will face the host school, No. 34-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. The Gusties previously defeated the Warhawks 5-4 in March.
