MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – After dropping game one Thursday night at the Augsburg Dome, the Gustavus softball team shut out Macalester in game two to salvage a split. The Gusties move to 7-15 overall and 3-5 in the MIAC, while the Scots move to 9-19 overall and 3-7 in the league.
The Scots got off to a quick start with two runs in the first inning and held the lead throughout. Four more runs were added in the third inning on five hits and an error, and Macalester held a 6-0 lead until the Gusties ended the shutout in the sixth. Ashley Beise (Jr., Loretto, Minn.) singled up the middle to score Ashley Neuenfeldt (Fy., Bloomington, Minn.). Gustavus added two runs in the seventh on a passed ball and an error, but the Scots ended the threat and secured the win.
Neuenfeldt took the mound loss, allowing four earned runs in six innings or work. The Gustie offense was limited to three hits.
Gustavus used solid pitching and error-free defense to shut out the Scots in game two. Neuenfeldt went the distance with just two hits allowed. She struck out eight and walked two.
Sidney Welp (So., St. Peter, Minn.) knocked in the game-winning run in the opening frame. Emily Webb (Jr., Maple Lake, Minn.) scored on the play after reaching on a single.
Four scoreless innings passed before the Gusties added an insurance run in the sixth. Webb doubled to right field to plate Marissa Marsolek (Fy., Savage, Minn.).
Webb (2-3, R, RBI) and Beise (2-2, BB) led the team at the plate with two hits apiece.
The Gusties return to the Augsburg Dome on Saturday morning to face Hamline. Game one of the doubleheader begins at 7:30 a.m.
