ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s tennis team wrapped up the ITA Division III National Team Indoor Championships on a high note, defeating 11th-ranked University of Redlands 5-1 for the consolation championship. The victory improves the Gusties to 6-4 overall as they return to conference action next weekend.

Emory University won its third straight ITA Indoor championship with a 5-4 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, while Chicago took third place with a 5-4 win over Washington University-St. Louis.

“The guys were outstanding today,” Head Coach Tommy Valentini said. “Redlands is a great team and they played excellent doubles. We played a very good match at third doubles with mason Bultje stepping in and handling the pressure beautifully. The number two doubles match was played at an extremely high level and Tommy and Chase handled the end with great poise and trust. We were very fortunate to have the lead heading into singles. The guys showed tremendous resolve to keep believing in the singles. Mohanad executed his plan very well against huge talent and Chase’s tiebreak in the second gave us a big lift. From there the rest of the guys competed beautifully and believed no matter the score. Patrick capped off a high level weekend by staying calm in the clutch and we were fortunate to come through. Our entire team had a big role in this one and in our performance this weekend. We’ll look to use our experience today and throughout the event to keep growing and building trust. It was an honor to host this prestigious event. We can’t thank the Gustavus Athletics community and the ITA enough for the support.”
