ST. PETER, WINONA, Minn. – The No. 16-ranked Gustavus men’s tennis team won three matches Saturday as a split squad, improving to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the MIAC. The Gusties started the day with a home-opening 8-1 win over Morningside at the Swanson Tennis Center, followed by a 7-2 win over Luther at home and a 9-0 sweep at Saint Mary’s to start MIAC play.
“Our guys competed very well today,” Head Coach Tommy Valentini said. “We got off to a very good start against Morningside and then to use our depth against Luther and Saint Mary’s was important for our team. Our young guys stepped up beautifully and our leaders were great in both matches. Our energy in the doubles was solid and we are making good progress tactically. In singles the guys stuck to their game plans and competed with the poise and trust that is necessary for us to be the team we’re capable of being. We’ll hope to build on today’s effort as we move into a big weekend filled with exciting challenges.”
