ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus volleyball team is set for its final non-conference match of the 2017 season, hosting the University of Wisconsin-Stout Tuesday evening at Gus Young Court.
The Gusties (20-3, 6-1 MIAC) are in search of their eighth consecutive victory, taking on the Blue Devils (8-16, 2-3 WIAC) at 7 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Gustavus most recently hosted the No. 19-ranked University of St. Thomas last Wednesday at Gus Young Court, sweeping the Tommies to claim the top spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings. The Black and Gold posted a .310 attack percentage, totaling 42 kills with 11 errors on 100 attempts while limiting the visiting Tommies to a .136 attack percentage. Gustavus also tallied 41 assists and eight service aces while leading St. Thomas in team blocks, 9-6.
IN THE POLLS
The Gusties remained in the same spot in the most recent Division III National rankings, ranking No. 11 in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll for the fourth consecutive week. Fellow MIAC opponents St. Thomas dropped from No. 19 to No. 20.
THE SERIES
Tuesday’s contest marks the 18th all-time meeting between Gustavus and UW-Stout with the Gusties holding a 9-8 series advantage over the Blue Devils. Last season, Gustavus was defeated 3-1 against UW-Stout in Menomonie, Wis.
SCOUTING UW-STOUT
The Blue Devils went 2-1 last week, most recently sweeping Hamline University to improve its overall record to 8-16 while owning a 2-3 record during Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action. UW-Stout averages 11.8 kills per set and owns a .166 attack percentage. Junior middle hitter Kennedy Strain leads the Blue Devil attack, averaging 2.76 kills per set while compiling 243 kills on the season. Sophomore setter Jessica DuVal sets up the offense with 8.73 assists per set while sophomore Steph Cannon guides the defense with 4.71 digs per set.
GUSTAVUS NOTABLES
- The Gusties rank first in the MIAC with 13.5 kills per set and a .237 attack percentage, while ranking second with 1,345 digs to average 17.7 per set.
- Nora Holtan (Jr., Rochester, Minn.) ranks third in the MIAC with 776 assists and a .310 attack percentage.
- N. Holtan is just 25 assists away from 3,000 in her career.
- Brittany Luethmers (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) ranks second in the MIAC with 5.01 digs per set.
