MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team was shut out 3-0 at Augsburg University Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field, dropping its overall record to 6-4-1 and 3-2 during Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
Despite an even shot count at 13-13, and the Gusties leading 9-8 in shots on the goal, the Auggies found a way disallow any Black and Gold offensive finish.
Augsburg claimed a 1-0 lead at the 33rd minute, holding on to the lead into the intermission. The Auggies out shot the Gusties 8-6 in the first half with a 4-3 edge in shots on goal.
“The first 45 minutes was some of the best soccer We’ve seen all season. It was a great back and forth game, with quality play mixed with some really dangerous scoring opportunities,” said Head Coach Laura Burnett-Kurie.
Gustavus had some push back in the second half, outshooting Augsburg 7-5, but could not come back after suffering two more goals. The MIAC’s leading scorer in Ashley St. Aubin at the 46th minute prior to the Gusties giving up an own goal at the 65th minute.
“The second half didn’t go our way, with a couple of unlucky bounces. The soccer part is there for us, we just have to put all of the pieces of the puzzle together with our flight and edge. The MIAC is a different world of competitiveness, you have to always play your best to do well in the conference,” Burnett-Kurie said.
Ashley Becker (So., Farmington, Minn.) made five saves in loss as her record dips to 6-3-1. Lauren Johnson (Fy., Woodbury, Minn.) led the Gusties with three shots, two on goal.
The Black and Gold return to action with a non-conference matchup versus the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Tuesday. The Gusties and Blugolds will take Gustie Soccer Field at 4 p.m.
