ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s golf team is set to compete in the MIAC Championships this weekend at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan, Minn. The 54-hole tournament is played Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Gustavus enters the weekend with the fourth-best stroke average in the league (304.4), which is nearly five strokes behind the leader St. Thomas (299.5).
Throughout the fall season, which has consisted of nine rounds, Alec Aunan (Sr., Rock Island, Ill.) leads the team with a 74.1 stroke average (6th/MIAC). Aunan has two top-10 finishes with a low round of 67. Ben Hauge (So., Ramsey, Minn.) has been the No. 2 with an average of 75.4 strokes (13th/MIAC) and has one top-10 finish this season. Chris Captain (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) is in the No. 3 spot with an average of 77.4 strokes and one top-10 finish as well. The No. 4 spot will be filled by Carter Czichotzki (Fy., Moorhead, Minn.) with a 78.7 average, and Max Ullan (Fy., Blaine, Minn.) will round out the lineup with an 80.4 average after eight rounds this season.
Gustavus is the most storied program in the history of the MIAC with a league-leading 26 conference championships. The last MIAC title for the Gusties came in 2012. Last season, the Gusties placed second behind Saint John’s. Gustavus has also produced 24 individual champions with most recent being Captain in 2014.
The MIAC champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, which takes place May 15-18, 2018 at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.
