Softball Hosts Carleton For Senior Day

The Gustavus softball team closes out the 2017 campaign on Saturday, hosting a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Carleton College while the Gusties honor five seniors.

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus softball team closes out the 2017 campaign on Saturday, hosting a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Carleton College while the Gusties honor five seniors. 

Senior Day: Five seniors in Hannah Heacox (Stillwater, Minn.)Ali Hoffman (Sr., New Prague, Minn.)Rachel Malo (Owatonna, Minn.)Brooke Willemsen (Hamburg, Minn.), and Jena Willis (Sr., Kalispell, Mt.) will be honored. 

Last Time Out: The Gusties were swept at St. Catherine on Thursday, losing by scores of 9-3 and 5-4. In game two, Emily Carlson (Fy., Burnsville, Minn.) led the offense, tallying a career-high four hits along with her first collegiate home run.

The Series: Saturday’s games against Carleton mark the 78th and 79th all-time meetings between the two teams, with the Gusties holding a 59-18 advantage. Last season, Gustavus swept the Knights by scores of 5-2 and 8-2 in Northfield, Minn.

Scouting Knights: The Knights split a doubleheader against Saint Mary’s University yesterday, winning 5-4 and falling 11-4. Carleton owns an overall record of 16-16 while going 9-11 in conference play. The Carleton offense is led by sophomore outfielder Anna Lauko, who owns a MIAC second best average of .467. In the pitcher’s circle, the Knights are led by Sam Kile, who ranks among the top five pitchers in the conference with 12 wins, 131 strikeouts, and three saves.

  • Aly Freeman (Fy., Omaha, Neb.) earned her second start in the pitcher’s circle in game two at St. Kate’s and pitched her first career complete game.
  • Emily Carlson went 4-for-4 at the plate in game two and posted two runs and two runs batted in.
  • Sarah Pederson (Fy., Blaine, Minn.) collected her first collegiate RBI in game two.
  • As a team, the Gusties rank first in the MIAC with a 2.00 earned run average.
  • Jena Willis owns the third best ERA in the MIAC at 1.72.
  • Hannah Heacox ranks fifth in the MIAC with a 1.99 ERA and ranks second with 147 strikeouts.
