ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus softball team is set to head to Winona, Minn. Thursday afternoon for a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Saint Mary’s University.
Last Time Out: The Gusties most recently hosted two doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at Gustie Softball Field. Gustavus split a non-conference doubleheader on Friday against St. Scholastica prior to being swept Saturday versus the MIAC-leader in the College of Saint Benedict.
The Series: Thursday’s games against Saint Mary’s mark the 83rd and 84th all-time meetings between the Gustavus and Saint Mary’s softball programs, with the Gusties holding a 46-36 record. Last season, Gustavus swept the Cardinals at Gustie Softball Field.
Scouting Saint Mary’s: The Cardinals own a 7-18 overall record while going 1-8 thus far in MIAC play. Saint Mary’s was swept twice over the weekend at the University of St. Thomas and versus St. Olaf College.
The Cardinals are led by senior pitcher/infielder Ashley Betzold, who owns a .373 batting average along with 28 hits, four doubles, two home runs, and nine runs batted in. She also leads the team in the pitcher’s circle, recording 14 complete games (T-1st/MIAC) in 19 starts, and owns a 3.55 earned run average in 112.1 innings pitched.
Gustavus Notes
- Hannah Heacox (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) pitched 14 consecutive innings, starting both games in the pitcher’s circle in the losses against Saint Benedict on Saturday.
- Rachel Malo (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.) has 10 RBI in the last six games.
- Heacox ranks second in the MIAC with 106 strikeouts and is tied for the lead with 14 complete games.
- Jessica Neuman (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) and Jena Willis (Sr., Kalispell, Mt.) are each riding four-game hitting streaks.
