Alhouni, Saenz Fall In NCAA Individual Championships

Gustavus Adolphus College men's tennis players Andres Saenz (Sr., Cancun, Mexico) and Mohanad Alhouni (So., Tripoli, Libya) suffered a pair of losses Thursday in the 2016 NCAA Individual Championships that were played at Stowe Stadium at Kalamazoo College. In doubles, Saenz and Alhouni were defeated by Scott Rubinstein and James Spaulding of Emory University 6-2, 6-1, and in singles, Alhouni fell to Steven Chen of Wesleyan College by a 6-4, 6-0 count.

Marit Sonnesyn Takes 13th In 10k At NCAA Track & Field Championships

Gustavus long distance runner Marit Sonnesyn (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) capped her impressive Gustie career Thursday at the NCAA Division III Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a 13th place finish in the 10k, crossing the line in 38:03.22.

Five Track & Field Athletes Named USTFCCCA All-Region

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the All-Region honorees for the 2016 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field season and five Gustavus athletes earned recognition as part of the All-Central Region Team. On the men’s team, Michael Hensch (Fy., North Branch, Minn.) and Sam Fischer (Sr., Sauk Centre, Minn.) were honored as All-Region, and on the women’s team, Mallory Butchko (Fy., Elko, Minn.), Marit Sonnesyn (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.), and Sarah Swanson (Sr., Fairbanks, Alaska) were named All-Region.

Alhouni, Saenz To Represent Gustavus at NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Individual Championships

UPDATE (2:32 p.m. May 25): The singles and doubles draws have been released. Mohanad Alhouni will face Steven Chen of Wesleyan (CT) at 9 a.m. Thursday in the singles draw, and Alhouni and Andres Saenz will face Scott Rubenstein and James Spaulding of Emory at 3 p.m. Thursday in the doubles draw.

Sonnesyn, Swanson To Represent Gustavus At NCAA Track & Field Championships

UPDATE (12:49 p.m. May 25): Due to the predicted severe weather Thursday afternoon and evening, the Division III Track and Field and Cross Country Committee has decided to adjust the championship schedule of events for Thursday. Marit Sonnesyn is competing in the 10k, which will now begin at 4:35 p.m.

Jeff Annis, head softball coach at Gustavus Adolphus College, has announced his retirement after 11 seasons at the helm of the program.

Tyler Jakes And Chris Narum Invited To NCAA’s Career In Sports Forum

For the seventh year, the NCAA is inviting more than 200 current student-athletes and NCAA postgraduate scholarship recipients, with an interest in working within the sports industry, to the Career in Sports Forum in Indianapolis. A committee from within the NCAA membership selected two student-athletes from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to attend, both of which from Gustavus Adolphus College - junior football player Tyler Jakes (North Mankato, Minn.) and senior men’s basketball player Chris Narum (Eagan, Minn.).

Six Gusties Recognized In MIAC Softball Postseason Awards

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its 2016 Softball postseason awards Monday afternoon and three Gusties were named to the All-Conference Team. Representing Gustavus on the 2016 MIAC All-Conference Softball Team are catcher Nathalee Boissiere (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.), pitcher/outfielder Hannah Heacox (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.), and first base/pitcher Jena Willis (Jr., Kalispell, Mt.). Outfielder Rachel Strandmark (So., New Ulm, Minn.), utility player Jessica Williams (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) and infielder Emily Webb (Fy., Maple Lake, Minn.) were also recognized by the MIAC as Honorable Mention selections.

Men’s Tennis Concludes Season With 5-2 Loss To No. 8 Chicago In Third Round of NCAA Championships

The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s tennis team concluded its 2015-16 season Sunday, suffering a 5-2 loss to No. 8-ranked University of Chicago in the third round of the NCAA Championships played at the Stagg Field Tennis Courts. The Gusties earned two out of three doubles matches before the Maroons were able to win four straight points in singles to clinch the match. This marks the second consecutive year that Chicago has eliminated Gustavus from postseason play.

Women’s Track & Field Takes Fourth At MIAC Championships, Men Take Seventh

The Gustavus men’s and women’s track & field teams completed the MIAC Outdoor Championships on Saturday. The women took fourth place with 85 points, while the men took seventh with 55 points.
