Football Looks To Get Back On Track Saturday At St. Olaf

GA-FlipSt_Olaf_MN_OLD5 helmetThe Gustavus Adolphus College football team is set to travel to Northfield, Minn. Saturday for a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference battle against St. Olaf College. The Gusties come into Saturday’s matchup with a 3-4 overall record and a 1-4 mark in the league after a 56-10 loss to Saint John’s last Saturday, while the Oles are 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the conference after a 32-25 win over Carleton last week.

SCOUTING THE GUSTIES

Last Saturday the Gustavus football team was overmatched by No. 10-ranked Saint John’s University’s strong offensive attack at Hollingsworth Field, falling by a score of 56-10. The Johnnies raced out to a 35-3 lead at halftime and maintained control the rest of the way. Saint John’s outgained Gustavus 437-129 in total yards, limiting the Gusties to 91 yards passing and 38 yards rushing.

Gustavus’s points came on a 26-yard field goal be Brendan Boche (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) in the first quarter and a 17-yard interception return by Ben Rengel (So., Sartell, Minn.) midway through the third quarter.

Christian Haffner (Fy., Lebanon, Tenn.) completed 9-of-18 passes for 83 yards and two interceptions. Ellis Hirman (Jr., Zumbrota, Minn.) was the top target with four catches for 39 yards. DaiVon Poole (Jr., San Angelo, Texas) carried six times for 24 yards. Drew Fredericksen (Jr., Forsyth, Ill.) led the team with 126 all-purpose yards, all on kick returns. Leeland Lauti (Jr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) and Zack Martinez (Sr., Lenexa, Kan.) led the defense with 12 tackles each.

As the MIAC enters Week 9 of the season, Gustavus is tied for No. 7 in the league standings. The Gusties have the sixth-best offense in the league, averaging 340.3 yards per game. The passing offense is No. 6 in the league with 192.4 yards per game, while the rushing offense is also No. 6 in the league with 147.9 yards per game.

On the defensive side of the ball, Gustavus ranks fourth in the MIAC, allowing 372.4 yards per game – 215.9 yards through the air and 156.6 yards in the ground. After making one interception last week against Saint John’s, the Gusties now have 10 picks on the season, which is second most in the league.

SCOUTING THE OLES

Jack Goldstein threw for 328 yards and two touchdowns as visiting St. Olaf claimed a 32-25 MIAC football win over Carleton on last Saturday at Laird Stadium. Jorgen Salveson had a team-best seven receptions for 127 yards while Connor Henderson and Connor Yahn each had scoring catches for the Oles, who won their third straight against Carleton.

Troy Peterson’s six-yard touchdown run with 4:23 left in the third quarter broke a 25-25 tie, capping a seven-play, 66-yard drive. Peterson rushed for 24 yards on three carries while Bryan Aviles had a team-high 82 yards with a touchdown on 27 carries. Zach Creighton had 14 receptions, two off of a school record, for 120 yards and a touchdown for the Knights (1-7, 1-5 MIAC).

St. Olaf held a slight edge in total yards, 438-429, while Carleton had 24 first downs to the Oles’ 21. There were five lead changes and St. Olaf was a little better on third down, converting on 10-of-17. Carleton was 7-for-15. The St. Olaf offense scored on each of its first five possessions.

Prior the last weekend’s victory over cross-town rival Carleton, St. Olaf has struggled defensively, allowing 422.4 yards per game, which ranks eighth in the MIAC. The Ole offense averages 364.9 yards per game – 265.3 through the air and 99.6 on the ground – which ranks fifth in the league.

After seven games this season, St. Olaf has used two quarterbacks with Jack Goldstein leading the way. Goldstein averages 188.3 passing yards per game with a 64.0 completion percentage to go with 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Bryan Aviles is the team’s leading rusher with 51 carries for 212 yards and three touchdowns. Troy Peterson paces the receiving corps with 36 catches for 425 yards and two scores. Defensively, Colten Yahn is the team’s top tackler with 44.5 stops, including eight for loss and one fumble recovery.
