EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The Gustavus men’s golf team took second place out of 16 teams at the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Sunday and Monday. The Gusties shot team scores of 303 on both days for a total of 606 (+34), which was 10 strokes behind the winner, UW-Eau Claire.
“We came out ready to go today and got off to a decent start, but just did not see any putts drip early enough,” Head Coach Scott Moe said. “I thought we hit the ball well on the front, then made the turn onto the back and missed some birdie opportunities on a downwind par five, and then lost a bunch of shots on 15 and 17 coming down the stretch. We are close, but still waiting to throw together four solid scores. Chris had another solid showing. We need to clean some things up before heading to the preview next weekend.”
Chris Captain (Jr., Rochester, Minn.) led the Gusties once again, shooting a 74-76-150 (+7), tying for fourth place out of 96 golfers. Max Savini (So., Ramsey, Minn.) was right behind, shooting a 74-77-151 and trying for seventh place. Alec Aunan (Jr., Rock Island, Ill.) rebounded in the second round with a 73 after shooting an 82 in the first for a total of 155. Ben Hauge (Fy., Ramsey, Minn.) shot a 75-80-155 and Sam Majka (Sr., Wayzata, Minn.) rounded out the five Gustie team qualifiers with an 80-77-157.
The Gusties next travel to Howe-in-the-Hills, Fla. next Sunday through Tuesday for the NCAA Preview, which features many of the best teams in Division III.
