UPDATE (2:32 p.m. May 25): The singles and doubles draws have been released. Mohanad Alhouni will face Steven Chen of Wesleyan (CT) at 9 a.m. Thursday in the singles draw, and Alhouni and Andres Saenz will face Scott Rubenstein and James Spaulding of Emory at 3 p.m. Thursday in the doubles draw.
ST. PETER, Minn. – Gustavus Adolphus College men’s tennis players Mohanad Alhouni (So., Tripoli, Libya) and Andres Saenz (Sr., Cancun, Mexico) are set to represent Gustavus at the 2016 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Individual Championships that take place May 26-28 in Kalamazoo, Mich. Alhouni and Saenz will pair up in the 16-team doubles draw, and Alhouni will also compete in the 32-individual singles draw. The selection of teams and individuals for the championships is based on win-lost record, strength of schedule, and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.
Alhouni is currently the No. 5 ranked player in the Central Region in the most recent ITA Rankings that came out on April 28. The Libya native has posted a singles mark of 26-9 during the 2015-16 season and is coming off a fourth place finish at the 2015 ITA National Small College Championships that were held this past fall in Sumter, S.C. Alhouni also competed in last seasons’s national singles draw and was eliminated in the first round by Tyler Carey of the University of Mary Washington where he fell by a 6-0, 6-1 count.
In doubles, Alhouni and Saenz enter the tournament ranked No. 4 in the most recent ITA Central Rankings that were also released April 28. This is Saenzs’ second consecutive season of earning a spot in the doubles draw, as he and Motasem Alhouni ’15 competed in last season’s tournament. There, the duo advanced to the quarterfinals before being defeated by Robert Kjellberg and Sebastian Sikh of North Carolina Wesleyan College by a final score of 6-2, 6-4. Together, Mohanad Alhouni and Saenz have compiled a record of 22-8 this season and are currently on a seven-match win streak.
