SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College women’s hockey team is set to host its home opener tonight when it welcomes St. Olaf College to Don Roberts Ice Rink for a non-conference game beginning at 7 p.m. The game will be the first of three for the Gusties against the Oles this year, as the two squads will play their two-game conference series on Jan. 22 and 23, 2016. The Gusties bring a 0-0-1 record into tonight’s contest, while the Oles come to town at 0-2-0.

Gustavus is most recently coming off a 2-2 tie in its season opener that took place this past Tuesday at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The Yellowjackets got on the board first, as Abby Constant-Bercie scored on a power play goal 12:32 into the first period to give the home squad an early 1-0 lead. However, just 11 seconds into the second period, the Gusties scored their first goal of the season when Erica Power (So., Lakeville, Minn.), Gustavus’s leading scorer from 2014-15, put one in the back of the net off assists from Kaitlyn Klein (So., Plymouth, Minn.) and Erin Moes (Fy., Hastings, Minn.). Then, 17 minutes later, the same trio combined to score again, this time with Klein scoring and Moes and Power on the assists, to give the Gusties a 2-1 advantage heading into the game’s final period. A little more than three minutes into the third, UW-Superior tied it back up at 2-2, when Leah Elledge scored her first goal of the season for the Yellowjackets. After that, neither team would score again in regulation, forcing overtime. There, each team was able to fire off three shots, but nothing would come of them, and the game ended knotted up at two.

St. Olaf has played two games this season, both coming against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Oles took on the Pointers last Friday and Saturday and fell in both games, but were competitive in each, as they lost game one 2-1 and game two 5-4. In its first game, St. Olaf trailed for the majority of the game, but Riley Anderson scored in the final minute to bring the Oles within one. In their second, the Oles pushed the Pointers to overtime. Jane Vezina scored twice for the Oles as they fought from a 3-0 deficit in the first period to tie the game at 4-4 in the final minutes of the third period. Hannah Forliti scored a goal of her own as well as assisting both of Vezina’s goals, while Kiki Platek became St. Olaf’s third goal-scorer of the night off of a power play late in the third period. However, UW-Stevens Point scored four minutes into overtime via a goal from Logan Harper to earn a sweep in the two-game weekend series.

Tonight’s contest marks the 37th meeting between Gustavus and St. Olaf in women’s hockey. The Gusties have controlled the all-time series with a record of 31-2-3. When these two teams met last season, Gustavus picked up a 7-1 victory over the Oles on Dec. 5, 2014 in Northfield. However, in their meeting the following day in St. Peter, the squads finished in a 1-1 tie.
