SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s soccer team will travel northbound for a game with Concordia College on Wednesday afternoon, its final road contest of the 2015 season. The game will take place at Jake Christiansen Stadium and Athletic Complex at 1 p.m. Gustavus brings a 7-5-3 overall record and 1-4-3 conference mark into Moorhead, while the Cobbers come into the contest at 4-12-0 overall and 2-7-0 in the MIAC.
Gustavus is most recently coming off a near three-goal comeback to non-conference opponent St. Scholastica. After falling behind 3-0 after one half of play, the Gusties nearly made a fierce comeback, but fell just short in a 3-2 loss to the Saints.
Gustavus got out to a slow start, as St. Scholastica scored three goals in the first 38 minutes of play. The Saints got goals from Jonny Harkin at 8:45, Sean Morgan at 17:20, and Jonny Winter at 38:17, with Kyle Farrar assisting on each.
However, the Gusties did not quit, and just 15 seconds before halftime, Ian Smith (Amherst, N.H.) received a pass from John Fox (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) and was able to get a shot over Saints’ goalie Sandy Davidson-Hunt to cut the St. Scholastica lead to two. Then, 15 minutes into the second half, Matt Murakami (Eden Prairie, Minn.) took a cross from Konnor Tranoris (Sr., Des Moines, Minn.) and put it home for his third goal of the year to make the score 3-2, which is where it would hold for the remainder of the game.
Concordia is most recently coming off a 4-1 victory over non-conference foe University of Minnesota-Morris on Sunday in Moorhead. A pair of goals in each half, including two goals from sophomore Jacob Schmidt, two assists and the game-winning goal from senior Dami Adegunle, and two assists from senior Nick Koerbitz helped the Cobbers to its fourth win of the season.
The Cobbers come into the contest tied for ninth with Gustavus in the MIAC standings, with each having tallied six total points on the year. Today’s meeting will be the 29th between Gustavus and Concordia in men’s soccer. The Gusties hold the advantage in the all-time series with a 22-4-2 record against the Cobbers. When these two teams last met, Gustavus earned a 2-0 win on Sept. 20, 2014 in Moorhead.
