ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s soccer team will welcome Bethel University to the Gustie Soccer Field on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game. The Gusties bring a 5-4-3 overall and 0-4-3 MIAC record into the contest, while the Royals come to town at 4-7-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the MIAC.
Gustavus is most recently coming off a 1-0 loss against Saint John’s University on Wednesday in Collegeville, Minnesota. The Johnnies scored the game’s only goal just 14 minutes into the game when Saint Johns’ Cole Howard threw a long throw-in pass to teammate Dylan Lehrer who was able to score on a header to the far post. The goal was Lehrer’s first of the season and would be all the home team would need to remain undefeated on its home field in 2015.
Bethel is coming off a 4-0 win over the University of Minnesota, Morris this past Tuesday in Morris, Minnesota. The Royals scored three first half goals to take an early, comfortable lead and the Cougars were never able to recover. Bethel outshot UM-Morris 18-9 and owned a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Royals are led in scoring by senior Ryan Ness who has tallied 11 points off four goals and three assists this season. Jakob Bartles has collected 76 saves for Bethel, which is good for the MIAC lead.
Saturday’s meeting will be the 51st meeting between Gustavus and Bethel in men’s soccer. The Gusties hold the advantage in the all-time series with a 31-11-8 record against the Royals. When these two teams last met, Gustavus earned a 7-1 win over Bethel in St. Peter.
