ST. PETER, Minn. – Following a two week hiatus of playing on its home turf, the Gustavus men’s soccer team will return to the Gustie Soccer Field on Saturday when it hosts Augsburg College in a 1 p.m. game. The Gusties enter the game with a record of 0-3-2 in the MIAC and 5-3-2 overall, while the Auggies come to town at 2-2-0 in the MIAC and 4-6-1 overall.
Gustavus is most recently coming off a 1-1 double overtime tie with Macalester College this past Tuesday in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Gustavus notched its first and only goal midway through the first half when Patrick Leach (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) scored his second goal of the season on an unassisted boot at the 34:55 mark to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. However, Macalester was able to tie it up late in the second half when Alan Schembri-Wismayer scored his third goal of the season off an assist from Danny Baumann in the 76th minute. The two squads played the remaining 14 minutes without any scoring, sending the game to overtime. There, despite six combined shots between the Gusties and Scots, neither team was able to find the net, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Augsburg comes into the game after suffering a 3-1 defeat to non-conference opponent Wartburg College this past Sunday in Waverly, Iowa. Christian Metzger scored the lone goal of the game for Augsburg, but host Wartburg built a 3-0 lead en route to a 3-1 win.
Metzger scored his second goal of the season for the Auggies in the 84th minute on assists by Jason Scheeler and Aaron Wylie, but Wartburg outshot Augsburg by a 31-6 margin in the game, including a 14-3 advantage in shots on-goal.
Saturday’s meeting will be the 61st meeting between Gustavus and Augsburg in men’s soccer. The Gusties hold the advantage in the all-time series with a 38-17-5 record against the Auggies, with the last result being a 2-0 victory for Gustavus on October 25, 2014 in Minneapolis.
