Women’s Soccer Heads Down River Valley For Match At Bethany Lutheran Today

After suffering its first MIAC loss last Saturday, the Gustavus women’s soccer team travels 10 miles south on Hwy. 169 for a non-conference match against Bethany Lutheran College this evening at 5 p.m.

PETER, Minn. – After suffering its first MIAC loss last Saturday, the Gustavus women’s soccer team travels 10 miles south on Hwy. 169 for a non-conference match against Bethany Lutheran College this evening at 5 p.m. The Gusties enter the match with a 5-4-1 overall record, while the Vikings are 6-5-2 on the season.

Gustavus is coming off a 4-3 loss at Carleton last Saturday. Maddison Ackiss (Jr., Fairbanks, Alaska) gave the Gusties a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of play before the Knights scored the equalizer in the 10th minute. Emily Odermatt (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) then tallied her first career goal in the 27th minute and Laura Johnson (So., Chanhassen, Minn.) followed with her first goal of the season in the 38th minute to give the Gusties a 3-1 lead at halftime. But it was all Carleton in the second half as it scored three unanswered goals in the final 24 minutes of play.

Gustavus took six shots throughout the match compared to 16 by the Knights. Ashley Becker (Fy., Farmington, Minn.) took the loss are recording seven saves. Becker has played all 851:48 in goal for the Gusties with a 1.37 goals against average and a .787 save percentage.

After 10 matches this season, Ackiss leads the Gusties with seven goals on 30 shots for a .233 percentage, while Sophie Leininger (So., Plymouth, Minn.) has a team-best five assists.

Bethany Lutheran has faced two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools this season, losing 9-0 to Augsburg on Sept. 8 and most recently losing 4-0 to St. Catherine on Monday.

Bethany’s Taylor Friehl (Sr., Albert Lea, Minn.) attempted two shots with one of them on goal, which made up the scoring chances for the Vikings against St. Kate’s.  The starting goalkeeper for the Vikings, Averi Cash (So., Ottumwa, Iowa) had seven saves on the night. St. Catherine attempted 25 total shots.

After 13 games this season, Friehl and Ali Mix (Fy., Oklahoma City, Okla.) lead the Vikings with six goals apiece. Mix and Bridget Hennen (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) are the leaders in assists with five each. Nicole Moldstad (So., North Mankato, Minn.) has taken the most shots with 46 and has scored four times.

Cash has played 12 games between the posts and has a 2.32 goals against average and a .768 save percentage. She is 2-3-1 on the season.
