Ninety minutes of play wasn’t enough time to decide a victor in Wednesday night’s Gustavus women’s soccer match at Saint Mary’s University as the Gusties and Cardinals played into overtime. But it was the Gusties who came out on top in the end as Maddison Ackiss (Jr., Fairbanks, Alaska) scored the game-winner in the 98th minute – her third game-winning goal of the season.
The game-winning goal for Ackiss added to an already impressive month for the junior forward as the Gustavus Sports Information Department named Ackiss its September Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Month. The West Valley High School product ranks No. 1 in the MIAC with six goals, 29 shots and three game-winners. Her 16 shots on goal are third most in the conference, while her 12 points are fifth in the league.
The Gustavus defense was stout against Saint Mary’s, holding the Cardinals to just two shots throughout the entire match. The offense rattled off 14 shots before the 15th found the back of the net.
Ashley Becker (Fy., Farmington, Minn.) made two saves in the win, while her counterpart made 11 saves in a losing effort.
Carleton is coming off a 2-0 victory at Bethel University on Wednesday. The contest between the Knights and Royals was a rematch of the MIAC quarterfinals from a year ago, and once again it was Ava Lewis (Jr., Seattle, Wash.) who set the tone with a header goal for Carleton.
In the 19th minute, Annika Martensson’s (Fy., Wauwatosa, Wis.) one-touch ball to Caroline Sheffield (Jr., Seattle, Wash.) was sent toward the goal, and Lewis headed it home for her fifth score of the season and third of the MIAC schedule, which is second most among conference players.
Ruby Kazemi (Fy., Missoula, Mont.) tacked on an insurance goal in the 44th minute, heading home a cross from Catie Williams (Jr., Belmont, Mass.) toward the far post.
Elaine Sundberg (Jr.,Libertyville, Ill.) made her first collegiate start in goal for Carleton and registered three saves en route to the Knights’ fifth clean sheet of the campaign.
