ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s soccer team will look to re-enter the win column on Saturday when it travels to Carleton College for a 1 p.m. game at Bell Field. The Gusties enter the game with a record of 5-2-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the MIAC, while the Knights come into the game at 4-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the MIAC.
Gustavus heads to Northfield after playing to a 0-0 double overtime tie with Saint Mary’s University this past Tuesday in Winona, Minnesota.
Gustavus outshot Saint Mary’s 16-9 in the contest, including an 8-3 mark on goal, but could not get a ball by Cardinal keeper Evan Claffy who evened his record to 2-2-2 after making eight saves. Gustie goalkeeper Anders Severson (Lino Lakes, Minn.) moved his record to 5-2-1 on the year after collecting three saves in all 110 minutes played.
“A top class performance tonight,” Coach Mike Middleton said of the game. “I’m not sure what else we could have done differently to be frank – if it was a boxing match, they would have had to stop it. It’s the second game in a row we’ve dominated, with the opposition just hoping to catch us on the break – at least we did not fall for the sucker punch tonight. Sometimes you need the ball to roll for you, but it didn’t tonight. I think we must have had several black cats run across our path – we could’t buy any luck. But, a really pleasing performance and great to watch, albeit a little frustrating.”
Carleton comes into the game after earning its first MIAC win against Bethel University this past Tuesday in Arden Hills, Minnesota. The Knights outshot the Royals 20-8, with half of those attempts being on goal. Carleton took the early lead in the 12th minute as senior Sam Hawyard notched his first goal of the season and career.
Bethel evened the score in the 68th minute on a goal by Danny Jaderholm, but Carleton answered back in the 79th minute on a well-struck free kick by Branden McGarrity. Royal goalkeeper Jakob Bartels deflected the shot, but the Knights’ Alex Griese slotted home the rebound for the game-winning score.
Saturday’s meeting will be the 41st meeting between Gustavus and Carleton in men’s soccer. The Gusties hold the advantage in the all-time series with a 25-8-7 record against the Knights, with the last result being a 1-0 victory for Gustavus in the MIAC Semifinals on November 5, 2014 in St. Peter.
