ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Gustavus football team won a shootout against Augsburg, 59-42, Saturday to stay undefeated, and a big defensive performance by senior defensive back Nick Frandsen (North Oaks, Minn./Totino-Grace) helped the Gusties keep the Auggies at arm’s length. Frandsen had the play-of-the-game with a huge interception-return touchdown, to go along with double-digit tackles and great play in the secondary. For his performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Frandsen Monday with the MIAC Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week award.
Augsburg was driving deep into Gustavus territory to try and make it a one-score game late in the second quarter when Frandsen jumped a route, picked off a pass, a weaved 69 yards for a game-changing touchdown that pushed the Gustie lead to 35-14. In addition, he made 10 total tackles (six solo) and broke up two passes to lead the Gustavus defense. This season, Frandsen ranks seventh in the MIAC with 15 solo tackles, 11th with 26 total tackles, and tied for first in interceptions (two) and touchdown returns (one).
Thanks to Saturday’s big win, the Gusties are still undefeated at 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Gustavus appeared again in the “Others receiving votes” section of both polls with 29 points in the AFCA Division III Coaches’ Poll and 12 points in the D3football.com Top 25 to essentially earn a top 30 ranking in each. The Gusties will try to improve to 5-0 Saturday with a trip to Carleton for a 1 p.m. MIAC kickoff.
