RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The Gustavus Adolphus women’s cross country team continued its strong start to the season, placing second of eight teams with 56 points at the Falcon Invite on Friday afternoon.
“Our team performed very well today,” said Coach Dale Bahr. “Both our men and women ran very well as a team and it was nice to see that type of effort from everyone. I’m proud of the way we came to compete.”
Seniors Lauren Shurson (Chanhassen, Minn.) and Marit Sonnesyn (Plymouth, Minn.) led the Gusties on the afternoon. Shurson finished in fifth place with a time of 22:41.71, while Sonnesyn was right behind her, placing sixth in 22:44.77.
“Lauren and Marit are doing a great job in leading our team, said Bahr. “I’m proud of how they’ve both stepped up…they’ve been great role models for our younger runners.”
Mata Agre (Sr., Medina, Minn.) (23:45.65), Lydia Hayes (So., Decorah, Iowa) (23:45.76), and Lotus Schifsky (Fy., Prescott, Wis.) (23:46.05) formed a formidable pack in the middle and rounded out the Gustie scoring, placing 14th, 15th, and 16th, respectively.
Carleton College stood atop the podium at the race’s conclusion with 40 points, while the University of Wisconsin-Stout was third with 73.
“As well as we ran, I know we still have a ways to go to be our best,” said Bahr. “I do not believe we have truly seen how good either our men or women can be and I’m excited to continue seeing their progression.”
