St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s tennis team will travel to Whitewater, Wisconsin to face the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, May 9 at 10:00 a.m. No. 18 Gustavus heads into the weekend with an overall record of 18-10 after earning the MIAC’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament with its MIAC Playoff Championship win over Carleton last Saturday. No. 25 UW-Whitewater gained access to the postseason thanks to a Pool B bid. The Warhawks are now 22-7 following their first round victory over Edgewood College.
This weekend’s NCAA Regional will be held at the Wangerin Courts with Premier Tennis and Fitness in Janesville serving as the backup site in case of inclement weather. The UW-Whitewater Sports Information Department has a home page dedicated to this weekend’s regional, containing live stat links, a complete schedule, directions, a campus map, and lodging and food information. Throughout the tournament, the page will be updated with scores, stats, updated schedules and more.
Gustavus is making its 28th appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1983. With an all-time NCAA Tournament record of 47-32, the Golden Gusties have finished runner-up twice, third three times, and fourth five times in their previous 27 showings under the current “true team” format. Prior to 1983, Gustavus won NCAA Championships in 1980 and 1982 when champions were based on individual scoring at the NCAA Tournament. In all, Gustavus has earned a trip the NCAA’s postseason tournament a total of 30 times in school history.
In last season’s NCAA regional held at the Brown Outdoor Courts in St. Peter, Gustavus defeated UW-Whitewater 5-0 in its opening match. This will be the fourth straight season that Gustavus and UW-Whitewater have met in the NCAA Tournament. The Gusties have come out victorious in all three of those previous meetings.
The winner the Gustavus versus UW-Whitewater match will take on the winner of the other second round contest between Coe College on Chicago University in the region championship at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 10.
