Baseball Falls 8-3 To Augsburg To Conclude Home Season

SAINT PETER, MINN. – Playing in its final home game of the 2015 season, the Gustavus Adolphus baseball team was not able to hold off Augsburg College, as it fell 8-3 in a nine-inning non-conference game played at the Gustie Baseball Field. The loss brings Gustavus to 13-21 overall, while Augsburg improves to 17-16 on the season.

The Auggies were able to get to Gustie starter John Lundquist (Fr., Rochester, Minn.) right off the bat, as they scored four runs in the first two innings, including a three-run third that forced Lundquist out of the game after pitching the game’s first two innings.

However, the Gusties tacked on two in the bottom of the second to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Auggies and keep the game within reach. Gustavus’ two runs in the inning came thanks to a Max Fidler (Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) homer which brought in Dalton Mattson (So., Princeton, Minn.), Fidler’s second home run in the past three games.

Freshman Casey Lewandoski (Fairbanks, Alaska) continued his impressive stretch on the mound, as he pitched the third, fourth and fifth innings and gave up just one run (zero earned), but Augsburg had the answer in the later innings, as it scored a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 7-2 lead, which would be all the Auggies would need to secure the victory.

Lundquist suffered the loss after giving up four earned runs on six hits in the first two innings, while the Auggies’ Ryan Minder got his first win of the year on the mound after pitching four innings and giving up just two earned runs off four hits.

Gustavus will play its final two games of the 2015 season tomorrow afternoon when it travels to Collegeville, Minnesota for a MIAC doubleheader with Saint John’s University at 1 p.m.
