Menomonie, Wis. – The Gustavus Adolphus softball team continued its busy late-season schedule with a non-conference sweep over UW-Stout on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Gusties edges the Blue Devils 1-0 in game one and then ran away with a 3-2 victory in five innings in game two.
With the wins, Gustavus improves to 28-14 overall and will now cap its regular season schedule with a non-conference doubleheader against St. Scholastica on Monday. The Gusties will travel to the campus of the University of Minnesota where they will take on the Saints beginning at 6:30 p.m. UW-Stout drops to 12-23 with the losses.
Game One Recap
The pitching performance of Hannah Heacox (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) was the story of the day’s opener. Heacox went the distance to improve to 12-4 after allowing just two hits to go along with nine strikeouts. She sat down the last nine batters of the game in order and finished with her second-lowest hit-total of the season.
The lone run Heacox needed to pick up the victory came in the top of the fifth inning. Jena Willis (So., Glacier, Mont.) started off the frame with a double and then later scored on a sacrifice fly hit to left field by Rachel Malo (So., Owatonna, Minn.).
Taking the loss for UW-Stout was Tori Workman who allowed five hits in seven innings.
Game Two Recap
The Gustavus offense came alive to score 13 runs on 12 hits in the nightcap. The Gusties scored in all five innings; two in the first, three in the second, four in the third, one in the fourth, and three in the fifth.
Leading the Gusties at the dish was Jessica Williams (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) who went 3-for-3 with a double, a run, and four RBI. Shelby Nosan (Sr., Baudette, Minn.) followed behind by going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs, and three RBI, and Addy Neslen (Jr., Willmar, Minn.) also had a multiple-hit game by going 2-for-4 with two runs.
Gustavus starter Sarah Rozell (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) earned the win to improve to 10-6 with a complete-game performance of her own. She allowed two runs (zero earned) on nine hits. Beth Wood suffered the loss after allowing nine runs (seven earned) on seven hits in three innings.
