Northfield, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus softball team extended its winning-streak to five games with a sweep against St. Olaf College on Sunday afternoon at Mabel Shirley Field. Gustavus capped the weekend with a 5-0 win in game one and a 5-1 in game two to improve to 18-12 overall and 8-4 in the MIAC. St. Olaf drops to 9-21 overall and 4-8 in the MIAC with the losses.
The Gusties will be back on the diamond Tuesday, April 14 when they travel to St. Paul to face St. Thomas in a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Game One Recap
The Gusties got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the first inning in game one. With Shelby Nosan (Sr., Baudette, Minn.) on second base, Carly Klass (Sr., Richfield, Minn.) ripped a triple to right field to put the Black and Gold up 1-0.
Gustavus added to its lead (2-0) with a one-run single by Kaitlyn Bicek (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) in the top of the fifth, and then broke the game open with three runs in the top of the seventh. Rachel Malo (So., Owatonna, Minn.) drove in Kim Kurtzweg (Fy., Arlington, Minn.) with a single, and Klass brought in Nosan and Malo with a single of her own later in the frame.
Carly Klass led the way at the dish by going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Nosan was right behind her senior teammate by going 2-for-3 with two runs.
Pitching the complete-game shutout for the second straight game was Hannah Heacox (So., Stillwater, Minn.). Heacox improves to 6-3 after allowing five hits and striking out eight.
Game Two Recap
The Gusties grabbed an early lead in game two with three runs on three hits in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Shelby Nosan delivered a bases-clearing double to left field to score Rachel Malo, Jessica Williams (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.), and Addy Nelsen (Jr., Willmar, Minn.).
Gustavus went on to tack on a run in the fourth and another in the fifth. Nelsen scored on a Williams sacrifice in the fourth, and Paige Breneman (Sr., Sherburn, Minn.) scored a Carly Klass sacrifice in the fifth.
Addy Nelsen led the Gusties with a 3-for-3, two-run performance at the plate. Kailey Morgan (Sr., Mound, Minn.) was next in line, going 2-for-3.
The only blemish on starter Sarah Rozell’s (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) stat line was a run in the bottom of the sixth. Rozell improves to 6-5 after giving up a run on seven hits in a complete-game showing.
