Baseball Falls To No. 8 St. Thomas In Game One 4-2; Game Two Halted

SAINT PETER, MINN. – The Gustavus Adolphus baseball team was defeated 4-2 by the University of St. Thomas in a 10-inning first game of a doubleheader played on Wednesday afternoon at the Gustie Baseball Field. St. Thomas led Gustavus 3-2 after five innings in game two, but the game was halted due to darkness and is slated to be resumed Friday at 4 p.m. in St. Peter, barring inclement weather. With its loss in game one, Gustavus falls to 2-3 in the MIAC and 6-12 overall, while No. 8 St. Thomas improves to 6-1 in the MIAC and 14-5 overall.

GAME ONE: St. Thomas 4, Gustavus 2 (10 innings)
After the Tommies’ Anthony Winters hit a solo shot in the top of the first, Gustavus responded with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, both Dalton Mattson (So., Princeton, Minn.) and Josh Chatfield (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) walked and proceeded to advance to second and third during the next at-bat thanks to a wild pitch. Then, a Sam Warner (Jr., Chanhassen, Minn.) single to right field scored both Mattson and Chatfield to give Gustavus a 2-1 lead.

However, St. Thomas would answer the call in the sixth and tied the game at 2-2 thanks to a Gustavus error. The game remained scoreless from there until the tenth inning when the Tommies scored twice more to take a permanent 4-2 lead.

GAME TWO: St. Thomas 3, Gustavus 2 (IN PROGRESS)
Game two was halted after five innings, with the Tommies leading the Gusties 3-2. It will be resumed on Friday, April 10 at 4 p.m. at the Gustie Baseball Field.
