Lizzy Stanczyk Named MIAC Women’s Tennis Athlete Of The Week

ST. PETER, MINN. – Gustavus Adolphus women’s tennis junior Lizzy Stanczyk (Plymouth, Wis.) has been named the MIAC’s Women’s Tennis Athlete-of-the-Week, as voted on by the MIAC sports information directors. Playing one position above her regular spots of No. 2 doubles and No. 3 singles, Stanczyk went 4-0 at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles in two non-conference matches against the College of St. Scholastica and Minnesota State University, Mankato this past Saturday to help Gustavus improve to 7-9 overall.

In the Gusties’ first match against St. Scholastica, Stanczyk and partner Michaela Schulz (So., Elk River, Minn.) earned an 8-1 win over Daniela Rojas/Madeleine Scanlan at No. 1 doubles to help Gustavus complete a doubles sweep against the Saints. Then in singles, Stanczyk kept the momentum rolling as she made quick work of Scanlan at No. 2 singles in a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Stanczyk and Schulz continued their impressive doubles play later Saturday evening, as the pair toppled Killian Doran and Sarah McCann of Division II Minnesota State 8-1. In singles play, Stanczyk found herself in a 3-5 first set hole against the Mavericks’ Melissa Mashburn, but fought off three set points to come back and earn a 7-6 (1) opening set victory. Stanczyk then held on for a 6-4 second set win to stay a perfect 4-0 on the day.

The Plymouth, Wisconsin native currently owns a four-match doubles win streak with Schulz and has won three of her past four singles matches. This spring, Stanczyk holds a record of 5-6 in singles and 7-4 in doubles. She is the second Gustie in a row and third this season to earn women’s tennis athlete-of-the-week honors.

Stanczyk and company will have a weekend off from competition before heading to Madison, Wisconsin on April 3 and 4 to take place in the Midwest Invitational.
