St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus women’s soccer team fell to Concordia College 4-1 on Saturday afternoon in a matchup with the MIAC’s first place team. Concordia took a 2-0 lead into halftime and never looked back en route to its second conference victory. Gustavus drops to 0-4-2 (0-1-1 MIAC), while Concordia moves to 7-1-0 (2-0-0 MIAC).
The two teams played to a stalemate over the first 13 minutes, but Concordia senior midfielder Marta Prosinski broke the tie at the 13:50 mark off an assist from Paige McCullough. A little over 15 minutes later, Cobber forward Elizabeth Robinson scored her second goal of the season to give Concordia a comfortable 2-0 lead heading into the half.
“We came out flat today,” said head coach Laura Burnett-Kurie. “We were able to turn it around in the second half and battled a lot harder. It was nice to see our depth used and some new faces on the field who did well to impact the play.”
Concordia would score twice more in the second half, including an additional goal from Robinson, before Gustie forward Maddison Ackiss (So., Fairbanks, Alaska) put Gustavus on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at 73:50 for her third score of the season. All three of Ackiss’s goals have been unassisted.
Concordia outshot Gustavus 11-1 in the first half, but only 6-5 in the second, to give the Cobbers a 17-6 shot advantage on the day.
Caroline Olson (Sr., York, Penn.) played all 90 minutes between the posts for Gustavus and fell to 0-3-2 on the season after allowing four goals and making five saves.
Gustavus will have to move on quickly, as it plays again on Tuesday evening in a non-conference battle with Crown College. That match is set for 7 p.m. in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota.
