St. Peter, Minn. – After a one-year hiatus, the Gustavus Adolphus women’s golf team will return to South Bend, Indiana to compete in the O’Brien National Invitational hosted by Saint Mary’s College. The tournament will be played at the Warren Golf Course on the campus of the University of Notre Dame on Sunday and Monday, Sept. 14-15. Sunday’s round begins with tee times at 11 a.m., while Monday will feature a shotgun start beginning at 9 a.m.
Gustavus did not participate in the O’Brien National Invitational in 2013, but was a regular in South Bend from 2009-2012. In its last appearance in 2012, Gustavus placed 10th out of 10 teams with a score of 680, finishing a mere stroke behind ninth place Whitman College.
Participating in the 2014 O’Brien National Invitational will be Gustavus, Centre College, DePauw University, George Fox University, Rhodes College, Washington University (St. Louis), Whitman College, University of Wisconsin-Stout, Wittenberg University and host Saint Mary’s College. Four of those teams – DePauw, George Fox, Washington University and Rhodes – were top 10 finishers at the 2014 NCAA National Championships this past spring and all of the teams, with the exception of Saint Mary’s, were ranked in the top 25 in the final poll taken last season, including Gustavus which was ranked 22nd.
The Gusties are looking to build off of their third place performance at the Augustana College Invitational this past weekend. Mae Meierhenry (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) led the Gusties in the tournament by totaling a 156 (+14), which was good for a sixth place finish in the individual standings.
