St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus women’s track and field team turned in a total of nine individual top three finishes at the 14th Annual Lee Krough Invitational held at the Gustavus Outdoor Track and Field Complex on Saturday afternoon. No team scores were kept at the meet, which included collegiate opponents Bethany Lutheran College, Martin Luther College, Minnesota State University, Mankato, UM-Morris, Saint Mary’s University, Southwest Minnesota State University, and the College of St. Scholastica.
Leading the way with second place finishes on the track was Haley Kemper (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) and Marit Sonnesyn (So., Plymouth, Minn.). Kemper crossed the finish line in 1:01.49 in the 400-meter dash, and Sonnesyn recorded a time of 18:30.42 in the 5,000-meter run. Marit Heckel (Jr., Viroqua, Wis.) posted a third place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:25.84.
Anna McDevitt (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) turned in the team’s top jumping performance of the meet with a runner-up finish in the triple jump after registering a distance of 33-feet 6.5-inches.
The Gustie women had a solid showing in the throws with five top three marks. Sara Swanson (So., Fairbanks, Alaska), Jill Kalis (Jr., Waseca, Minn.), and Rachel Colter (Jr., North St. Paul, Minn.) all placed second in their respective throwing events. Swanson sent the shot 39-feet 9.75 inches, Kalis tossed the discus 127-feet 5-inches, and Colter threw the javelin 117-feet 8-inches.
Third place finishers included Hayley Solheim (So., Crookston, Minn.) in the shot put (39’ 7.25”) and Elizabeth Weiers (Jr., Le Center, Minn.) in the hammer throw (156’ 10”).
The Gustavus track and field team will be back in action on Saturday, April 19 when it travels to Northfield, Minn. to take part in the Carleton Relays.
