Madison, Wis. – The Gustavus women’s tennis team competed in the Midwest Invitational, hosted at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis. The Gusties finished the weekend 1-2, falling to Washington University St. Louis (7-2) and Denison University (8-1) in the opening two rounds on Friday before defeating St. Catherine University (8-1) on Saturday in the seventh place match. With this weekend’s results, Gustavus moves to 11-3 overall on the season.
Gustavus 2, Washington University 7
The Gusties opened the weekend with a 7-2 loss to Washington University St. Louis on Friday. Gustavus notched a point in both the singles and doubles competition. Lizzy Stanczyk (Fy., Plymouth, Wis.) defeated Theresa Petraskova at fourth singles (6-1, 5-7, 10-7), while Michaela Schulz (Fy., Elk River, Minn.) and Laurel Krebsbach (Jr., North Oaks, Minn.) teamed up to beat Rebecca Ho and Corinne Rauck at first doubles.
Gustavus 1, Denison University 8
Gustavus followed up the opening round loss with a second loss to Denison University by the score of 8-1. Gustavus’s lone win against the Big Red came from Stanczyk once again. The first-year defeated Emily Holloway (6-2, 5-7, 10-7) at fourth singles to give her team its only point.
Gustavus 8, St. Catherine 1
The Gusties finished the weekend with an 8-1 win over St. Catherine University on Saturday morning. Due to the lack of available players, the Wildcats were forced to forfeit at sixth singles and third doubles, giving Gustavus a 2-0 lead right off the bat. The Gusties did not let it go to waste, as they extended the lead to 3-1 after splitting the remaining doubles matches. They then swept all five remaining singles matches to capture the 8-1 win.
